Use Your Chromebook to Make Phone Calls

Use Your Chomebook to Make Phone Calls

Since the district has moved over to a new phone system many of our classrooms no longer have the ability to dial an outside line. One way to get around this problem is to use your Chromebook to make a phone call. You can access Google Voice through your gmail account, or use Google Hangouts to make a call. There are several ways to initiate a phone call. Follow these simple directions to place your call.

Click on Google Hangouts or Google Voice

Simply click on either the Google Hangouts icon, or the Google Voice icon once you've accessed your gmail account. If you haven't setup your Google+ account you will have less features when using the Google Hangouts option. If you click on the Google Voice option you can simply type in the phone number that you want to call, or search for a number in your contacts. Phone calls made in the United States are free, and you can add money to your Google Voice account for international calls.

Once you add your number simply hit the enter key, and your number will be dialed. If you have a Google Voice number it will be displayed on the caller ID of the number you are calling. If you don't have a Google Voice number a generic Google number from California will be displayed. Once your number begins to dial you will see a Google Hangout window like the one pictured below.

If you have a phone icon with a no access icon through it you will need to enable the Google Voice plugin being blocked by your Chrome settings. Simply do the following:

  • Click the blocked plugin icon in the Omnibox
  • Select the Always allow plug-ins on mail.google.com option

Use Google Hangouts for More Options

I often initiate a phone call using Google Hangouts, because it gives me so many more options. I can actually call a number, and then add someone to the Hangout via video conference. That's right, I can combine video and phone calls into one Google Hangout. I can also use Google Hangouts to create a conference call with multiple phone numbers, and participants connecting via video. Google Hangouts has a limit of 15 participants.  Using Google Hangouts will allow you to call someone's phone number, and connect with them via a video call so they can see your computer screen during a presentation. I usually use this option with someone if they have a desktop without a webcam.

Once you click on the Google Hangout you need to follow two simple steps to begin your phone call. First check your settings for the call. You can simply click the +Add telephone link to begin the process.

Once you click the Add telephone option you'll need to add the number. Add the number and click on the call option.

 Helpful Hints

Use a pair of USB headphones/microphone for the best possible sound. You can also use a pair of earbuds with a built in microphone. I often use the headset that came with my smartphone whenever I'm in a pinch. If you get stuck trying to initiate a phone call using your Chromebook please use Google Hangouts to get some "just-in-time" help.
