Add Shared Documents to My Drive
Since Google has made the switch to the "New Drive" users have struggled with shared documents. It is difficult to search for documents in the "Shared with Me" portion of Google Drive. Don't fret because there are some easy solutions to getting documents that are shared with you into your Drive so they can be easily searched.
In our district people usually share a document or folder using the email notification option in Drive. Often a shared document or folder will look like the screenshot below.
Once you've opened the folder it allows you access to documents, but sometimes the documents behave as if they are in view mode. Recently when I open a shared folder the documents were displayed in the following manner.
Clicking on the document allowed me to access the information from items that are shared with me, but I often struggled to locate the document in the future. We have over 3/4 of a million documents in our district. More and more of them are being shared within the domain everyday. Click the Add to Drive button changed the frustration I was beginning to endure whenever I got the invitation to someone's document.
Adding to Drive has allowed me search through my files with relative ease, and allows me to retrieve files that I've yet to place in folders within My Drive. When I added this shared folder to My Drive I placed it in a nested folder.
I've made the step by step directions available on our website.
What Do I Do If There's No Blue Button to Add A Document to Drive?
The Blue Add to My Drive button is available for folders, but not necessarily available when you want to add one item at a time. Simply click on the item in the "Shared with Me" option in Google Drive, and click on the Overflow Menu (the three dots). Once you've selected the Overflow Menu you will have additional options available to you. Drag to Add to My Drive (see the screenshot below).
You can also skip the Overflow Menu by clicking on the icon directly to the left of the Overflow Menu.
