Collections - Destiny Discover's New Curation Tool

What is Follett's Destiny Discover Collection Tool?

Follett School Solutions describes their newest addition to the Destiny Discover suite of tools, Collections, as “A group of carefully selected resources. Think of a Collection like a digital scrapbook with audio, video, slideshows, along with documents and photos.” Simply stated, Collections, allows educators to curate all of their resources for a lesson or a unit of study in one simple place.

The Anatomy of a Collection

We have already started to use Collections to curate all of the teacher-created documents, web pages, video clips, Open Educational Resources (OER), and paid content necessary to instruct our students day to day. The "Anatomy of a Collection" image below illustrates how resources within a Collection are displayed.

The details of a Collection are located along the top-left panel of the Collection. Owners and editors of a Collection can edit the name, the description, and the sharing rights of a Collection. A neat feature regarding the collaboration tools in Collections is being able to view the Activity of the Collection. You can view when new resources are added by anyone with editing rights of the Collection. Additionally, you can view how many times your Collection has been copied by others when the Collection is within the public realm. It's also possible to create a PDF document containing live links & QR codes of the resources within a Collection.

The curated resources within a Collection are displayed to the right of the detail's panel. The Collections application scrapes a screenshot of the resource, adds details from the resource and pulls five tags from the metadata of the resource. Collections offer educators an opportunity to curate all of the resources necessary to instruct a diverse set of students.

Future Blogs & Companion Tools
