1:1 Chromebook Initiative - School by School Distribution

1:1 Chromebook Initiative:

It is exciting that we've embarked on a 1:1 Chromebook initiative in our district. We ask teachers and students to be patient as we roll-out the Chromebooks into each of the schools. Our plans for distribution are listed by each school below.

General Information

Students will be issued their own Chromebook. Students will use their WWPS Google Apps account to log into the Chromebook. When students log in for the first time on a brand new Chromebook they should use Ctrl-Alt-E when they get to the email log-in page. This will connect the student's account to the serial number for their individual Chromebook. Each student's Chromebook will have two stickers placed on the Chromebook. Each sticker will contain the student's name, their Google account, and their student ID. One sticker will be placed to the right of the track pad, and one will be place on the outside lid. The third sticker will be placed on the AC adapter.

Students should get a case for their Chromebook. Students SHOULD NOT put their Chromebook in their backpack with books, water bottles etc. The Chromebooks screens will crack if any pressure is put on the front cover. Please be careful with your Chromebook. The school district has purchased replacement screens for less than 1% of the total number of Chromebooks.

West Warwick High School

Chromebooks will be distributed to students in 9th grade before school begins on Tuesday, August 26, 2014. Students will also be able to pick-up Chromebooks after school from 1:45 - 2:15 pm. Students must have their parents sign the following policy statements, before they will be issued a Chromebook:
Students that are in grades 10-12 will receive their Chromebooks during Advisory period. Students will not be issued a Chromebook until their parents/guardians have signed the policies listed above. Unfortunately it will be difficult to manage HS student Chromebooks for students that do not get the policy paperwork signed. Once we have a clearer understanding of the total number of parents that do not sign the paperwork we will devise the appropriate solution at the HS level.

Deering Middle School

Student Chromebooks will be distributed to student core classrooms during the first week of school. Students and teachers will be able to request assistance from the WWPS IT team, or receive assistance from HS student helpers. Teachers can also follow these directions to enroll their students, and their Chromebooks.

Student Chromebooks should be stored in their homeroom classroom. Teachers can use any method of storing their student Chromebooks. Student will not be able to take their Chromebooks home until the WWPS Technology Take Home Policy is signed by the student and their parent/guardian. If parent/guardians do not allow their student to bring their Chromebooks home then the Chromebook will be stored in the classroom.

Wakefield Hills Elementary School

Student Chromebooks will serviced during the summer, and redistributed to students in the first week of school. New students to Wakefield Hills Elementary school will be issued a new Chromebook, or a reimaged Chromebook that was taken out of service due to the student leaving the school district. Students in kindergarten will receive their Chromebooks in the first few weeks of September. Students in grades 3 and 4 will be issued their Chromebooks immediately, and students in grade 1 and 2 should get their Chromebook by the end of the second week of school. If teachers are comfortable they can follow the enrollment directions, and assist their students with the enrollment process.

Student Chromebooks will be stored in their homeroom classroom. Teachers will decide when students can begin to bring their Chromebooks home to extend their learning. This will look different in each classroom, and at each grade level. Parents and students will have to resign the policy documents listed above.

Students and teachers will be able to request assistance from the WWPS IT team, or teachers can follow these directions to enroll their students, and their Chromebooks into the wwpsstudents domain.

John F. Horgan and Greenbush Elementary Schools

Student Chromebooks will be distributed to students in grades 3 and 4 in the first week of school. Students in grades 1 and 2 should get their Chromebook by the end of the second week of school. If teachers are comfortable they can follow the enrollment directions, and assist their students with the enrollment process. If teachers need assistance with the process they should make a request to the helpdesk.

Use Your Chromebook to Make Phone Calls

Use Your Chomebook to Make Phone Calls Since the district has moved over to a new phone system many of our classrooms no longer have the ability to dial an outside line. One way to get around this problem is to use your Chromebook to make a phone call. You can access Google Voice through your gmail account, or use Google Hangouts to make a call. There are several ways to initiate a phone call. Follow these simple directions to place your call. Click on Google Hangouts or Google Voice Simply click on either the Google Hangouts icon, or the Google Voice icon once you've accessed your gmail account. If you haven't setup your Google+ account you will have less features when using the Google Hangouts option. If you click on the Google Voice option you can simply type in the phone number that you want to call, or search for a number in your contacts. Using Aspen for Staff Attendance

How to Use Aspen for Staff Attendance & Substitute Replacement The West Warwick Public Schools partnered with Follett many years ago to use the power of Aspen for staff attendance and substitute replacement. We have three different workflows that staff members use for attendance and replacement purposes. Each one of the workflows will be explained below. How to Fill-out the Staff Absence Request Workflow in Aspen If a WWPS employee is going to be out for any reason that doesn't require approval they fill-out the Staff Absence Request Workflow. Sick, personal, bereavement, family illness, district sanctioned professional development, IEP meetings, and religious days are all examples of absences that do not need administrative approval.
