WHES 1:1 Chromebook Initiative

The West Warwick Public Schools is excited to announce that Wakefield Hills Elementary School received an $80,000.00 grant via the Rhode Island Foundation and the Rhode Island Department of Education to purchase 1 to 1 Chromebooks for our students. Acer 7 Chromebooks were purchased for every PK-12 student at WHES. Our first step after purchasing the Chromebooks was to communicate with the community. Principal, Keith Remillard, Director, Jim Monti, and many of the staff at WHES meet with families and students during the last week of summer vacation to engage the community in a Town Hall type of event. Over 45 families participated in one of the three events, asked great questions, and received valuable information about our 1:1 Chromebook initiative at WHES. Our mantra of communicate, collaborate and create content was repeated over our 3 Town Hall meetings.

Families received information about our policies, and some of our partner programs for low-cost Internet access.

Use Your Chomebook to Make Phone Calls Since the district has moved over to a new phone system many of our classrooms no longer have the ability to dial an outside line. One way to get around this problem is to use your Chromebook to make a phone call. You can access Google Voice through your gmail account, or use Google Hangouts to make a call. There are several ways to initiate a phone call. Follow these simple directions to place your call. Click on Google Hangouts or Google Voice Simply click on either the Google Hangouts icon, or the Google Voice icon once you've accessed your gmail account. If you haven't setup your Google+ account you will have less features when using the Google Hangouts option. If you click on the Google Voice option you can simply type in the phone number that you want to call, or search for a number in your contacts. Is Your Chromebook a Managed Machine? Enrolled Devices: As we get closer to PARCC testing it is important insure that your Chromebook is enrolled in our domain. Enrolling the device in the domain insures that you will have the appropriate Test Nav application on your device. It is possible that some of the devices in your classroom didn't get properly enrolled. Review this blog to learn how to check whether or not your students' machine is enrolled properly. Check Your Device Settings: Check your settings by clicking on the Settings Taskbar on your Chromebook. Collections - Destiny Discover's New Curation Tool

What is Follett's Destiny Discover Collection Tool? Follett School Solutions describes their newest addition to the Destiny Discover suite of tools, Collections, as “A group of carefully selected resources. Think of a Collection like a digital scrapbook with audio, video, slideshows, along with documents and photos .” Simply stated, Collections, allows educators to curate all of their resources for a lesson or a unit of study in one simple place.
